Beware, Take Care, and Waste Not

I had planned to write a column on getting through Christmas with your wallet and sanity in tack. I also had ideas for the people on your list who have everything. That was the plan. Life had a very different idea. I got way-laid by a cold (thanks to my beloved husband), endured tendinitis in my hand, and experienced a dental emergency. With the exception of tendinitis, I could have avoided the other two by simply taking better care of myself.
As the New Year approaches, I am making a resolution. I am making me a priority in my life. I think this is something we all struggle with, especially as women. We put ourselves last on a long list. This is no longer acceptable to me. It sounds easy to make yourself a priority but as I approach the date of my husband leaving to go play in the desert for two months (he’s in the army), I know that I will struggle with this. A bag of chips and dip will look mighty good after a long day at work. I will have to force myself to eat proper meals.
We are our own greatest asset. Taking proper care of ourselves now saves us money and heart-ache in the future. Many women go to bed and toss and turn, their mind filled with worries and thoughts. It takes me forever to fall asleep, trying to shut down a racing mind. That dental emergency I mentioned earlier was the result of a root canal performed last year that was waiting for a crown. But, there was always another place for the money and I put off getting that crown. As a result, I had the back of my tooth crumble away. No nuts, toffee, or hard candy for me until I can get that crown affixed the end of February. But, it could have been worse. I was lucky, very lucky. I was also stupid and should have made taking care of it a priority. That lesson has been learned.
So as a new year starts, make yourself a priority in your life. Just consider what will happen to your family if you go down. Remember that on a plane you have to put the oxygen mask on yourself before you help someone else. Take care of your greatest asset, yourself!
My Action Plan for Me for 2010
- Take vitamins everyday (including calcium and magnesium to help me sleep and help prevent osteoporosis)
- Yoga. I would love to do it everyday but starting out a few times a week will be an improvement.
- Exercise, either by going to the gym or at least going for a walk. Again everyday would be ideal but I have to be realistic.
- Eat proper meals, although some comfort food will be allowed when I miss my husband.
- Get a good night sleep. Without that it becomes impossible to function.
- Take a mental health day when it is needed.
- Maintain close social contacts.
