Sanitizing Solutions Without Harsh Chemicals

Posted on: 19 February 2016

Sanitizing solutions and cleaners have become a common staple in many households, but if you don't like the idea of using a chemical sanitizer in your home or office, there are some alternatives you can try. Here are a few alternatives to commercial sanitizers and cleaners you can use instead.

Soap and water

Good old-fashioned soap and water are great for removing germs from lots of different surfaces, including your skin. They don't kill germs, but they do remove them, and using soap and water correctly can be as effective as using commercial hand sanitizers. For cleaning your home, soap and water may be a little more tedious. A little dish soap and hot water can remove a great deal of germs, but you do have to scrub to remove them.

Essential oil blends

If you prefer a touch of fragrance while you clean, but you also want to be as natural as possible, you can try essential oil blends. Some essential oils, like lavender and tea tree oils, are known for their antibacterial properties. These can be used diluted with water or vinegar to clean surfaces in your home, your personal care items (toothbrushes, hairbrushes), and even your toilets.

A word of caution before you use essential oils--unless you are already very knowledgeable about using essential oils, you may want to ask an aromatherapist for help with determining the best quantities and types of oil to blend. Some essential oils have a very potent scent, and undiluted essential oils can irritate skin, so it's a good idea to wear gloves while mixing them.

UV sanitizers

If you're looking for a way to sanitize your home that isn't messy, consider trying one of the portable UV sanitizers that are available. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all work the same way. UV light is used to penetrate the thin skin of germs to kill them. The devices work best on flat, even surfaces but they can be used to clean objects in and around your home.

There are devices that are designed to clean specific items, like your toothbrushes and cell phones, and ones that can be used to clean counters, cutting boards, and other surfaces. It can be hard to verify how well these devices work, but studies show they do help eliminate germs. These tend to be most effective if used after you've already cleaned the surface with soap and water.

Getting your home clean and sanitized doesn't have to mean using strong chemicals. Try one or more of these alternatives and see what works best for your sanitizing needs. Make sure to use pure, bottled water in the solutions, too. Contact a local provider, like Water Maker Orangeville, to get started.

shopping with kids without leaving home

As the mother of four children under the age of eight, I do everything possible to avoid going shopping with the kids. I feel very fortunate that the busy mothers of today have the luxury of shopping online and having so many things delivered directly to the house. Another aspect of online shopping that I love is the fact that I can take my time, shop around, find great promo codes to use and get the best possible deal on what my family needs. I created my blog to help other parents find the things that they need without having to leave the home with a car full of kids.
