Dec 11th, 2010 | By Jody L Weymouth | Category: Economy

Think back to your childhood. Do you remember the gifts you received each year? Or do you remember the fun things? The Grinch had it right when he told us that Christmas could not be bought in a store; that maybe Christmas means a little bit more.

Will I survive a summer in Ontario with no cooling ocean breezes? Our house has no air conditioning and we do not have any window air conditioners. This may get very tricky, or at the least very sticky. To beat the heat without breaking the bank will take a plan. Can I keep my cool while keeping my green?

I have a great deal on my gym membership. It cost me only twelve dollars a month. But, in the year and a half that I have had this membership, how often have I actually used it? ZERO! Yes, that is correct—I have not gone once. My point: no matter how great a deal you obtain on that gym membership or piece of equipment, if you do not actually use it, it is a waste!

Vacations are supposed to rejuvenate us, not make us so stressed over the money being spent that we can not relax and enjoy ourselves. Somewhere along the way, the real purpose of a vacation has gotten lost. What do we really want or need from a vacation?

How Much Do We Need?

New Year: Turn Over a New Leaf
I had planned to write a column on getting through Christmas with your wallet and sanity in tack. I also had ideas for the people on your list who have everything. That was the plan. Life had a very different idea. I got way-laid by a cold (thanks to [...]

The holidays can be so expensive and there are many ways to get through it saving your sanity and your wallet. But, after realizing how much money we have spent on attending holiday events and dinners, I am shocked at what a difference this money could have made in other parts of the world. I am also trying to find that perfect gift for the person who has everything. This year I have decided to embrace the true meaning of the season: peace and good will to man. Reduce and re-use were en vogue in Newfoundland long before the environmental movement was created. Despite the fact that my parents both had good jobs when I was growing up, nothing was wasted. Choose Life; Choose a Job

I am about to start a job search again. I am currently an academic researcher in social science, my third “career” so to speak since I finished my bachelor’s degree in my early twenties, and I find my work very fulfilling and interesting. However, the downside of the job is its instability due to academic [...]

A Woman at Work: Discrimination of Mothers in the Workplace

I have always been career minded. Since I can remember, I have vowed to put school, then university, then work, first. When I finished school, my parents had to practically force me to take a “gap” year before university. I was so worried that if I took a year off my peers would get ahead [...]
